Training Day - Crowndale Mine Rescue Practise - Saturday 6th October 2007

Crowndale mine practise on the 6th October 2007 was attended by 9 of the DCRO team. The sessions led by Dave Warne focused on vertical hauling in the 50ft overhanging and awkward shaft. The rigging of the shaft required ground steaks and tree anchors. The team opted to vertical hoist the React Stretcher with a dummy, the team used a releasable deviation and had a jockey (Ruppert) shadowing the stretcher in its ascent. The hauling exercise worked very efficiently as result of good communication safety awareness and team work.

After the dummy was recovered to surface, Rick Stewart gave a brief historical and safety presentation in Crowndale Mine which was well received.

In the team de-brief the following points were considered:

  • Releasable deviations
  • Keeping the area under the shaft clear
  • Use of tail ropes for guiding the REACT stretcher whilst being hauled
  • Small knot at the top REACT Stretcher
  • Knowing the Jargon is important' e.g ..stope, rise, dip, deads etc...
  • Report supplied by Jon Evans
